Gazometers, colossal structures of industrial might, once dominated the landscape of Paris. Here on Rue des Gazomètres, their presence still echoes, a ghostly reminder of a bygone era. Rue des Gazomètres, a street named for these very structures, offers a glimpse into 19th-century Paris, a time when artificial gas was king. These weren’t measuring devices, despite the misleading name. They were storage tanks, holding the coal gas that lit and heated the city. Imagine Paris in the 1800s, bathed in the glow of gaslight, fueled by these very gasometers. By 1907, Paris boasted 61 of these iron giants. They dotted the city’s periphery, their rhythmic rise and fall marking the city’s breath, the ebb and flow of gas consumption. The largest reached a staggering 65 meters in height, 75 meters in diameter. They were symbols of progress, of the industrial revolution’s transformative power. But their reign was not to last. The discovery of natural gas in 1951 spelled their doom. Within a decade, methane from Lacq arrived in Paris, rendering the gasometers obsolete. One by one, they vanished from the cityscape, dismantled and forgotten. The last Parisian gasometer met its end in 1982. Here on Rue des Gazomètres, we stand on the very ground that once supported these industrial behemoths. Their presence, though gone, lingers in the very name of the street. A testament to an era when Paris, the City of Light, drew its brilliance from the towering gasometers that once graced its skyline.
