Built in 1953 Croxley Green Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and community resilience. Its story begins not in grand architectural designs but in the heart of a burgeoning village during wartime. In 1936 the Baptist movement sought to establish a church in rapidly expanding Croxley Green. Land was acquired on the Parrott’s Estate. World War II however delayed construction.
The Hertfordshire Baptist Association purchased the land. Worshippers initially attended nearby churches in Rickmansworth and Watford. A temporary Sunday School opened in 1940 at Durrants Secondary School. Sister Enid Cavell a Baptist Deaconess led this initiative. Donations provided Bibles and hymnals. Children attended under adult supervision.
Wartime restrictions hampered progress. The church met in homes. Social gatherings for women were held. A Girls’ Life Brigade formed in 1941. Church officers ensured the girls’ safety in the blackout. Clever thinking prevented requisitioning of the church land. Members used it for wartime allotments. This provided fresh produce during rationing.
A temporary building was erected. The first service at Croxley Green Baptist Church was held in August 1943. The Methodist Church kindly donated a pulpit. The Sunday School flourished with up to 150 children and 13 teachers. The church’s commitment to compassion extended beyond its borders. In 1947 they sent food and clothing parcels to Germany despite post-war rationing.
Peace brought renewed momentum. In 1950 plans for a new church commenced. Architect Mr J Reeve Young designed a building for 200-250 people. A Boys’ Club also formed and later a Boys’ Brigade. Wm King & Son Ltd. built the church. Despite only one member having a car the Rickmansworth Urban District Council insisted on parking for twenty cars.
Sister Enid Cavell laid the foundation stone in 1953. Church members each laid a brick. The church opened on April 11 1953. The Rickmansworth Baptist Church donated the Communion furniture. The opening coincided with Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. A pre-coronation service was held. The church’s story is one of perseverance faith and community. It stands as a vibrant hub serving Croxley Green for generations.
