Gazing across the French countryside, can you envision a village where two faiths coexist, their spiritual echoes intertwining? This is Moisenay, a commune nestled in the Seine-et-Marne department of the Île-de-France region. Moisenay, a name whispered on the winds of history, derived from the Latin “monasterium,” hinting at a monastic past. Located a mere 7.5 km northeast of Melun, Moisenay offers a tranquil escape from the Parisian bustle. The village is cradled by the gentle slopes of the French countryside, the altitude ranging from a modest 53 meters to a slightly loftier 92 meters. Through Moisenay meanders the Almont River, also known as the Ru d’Ancœur or Ru de Courtenain, a 42.15 km long tributary of the Seine. This waterway adds a touch of serenity to the landscape, its gentle flow reflecting the peaceful coexistence of the village’s two churches. In the heart of Moisenay stands the Catholic Church of St. Martin, a testament to the village’s rich history. Constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries, it boasts a unique distinction: the only bell tower in Seine-et-Marne constructed entirely of dressed stone. Classified as a historical monument, its sturdy frame has witnessed generations of Moisenay’s inhabitants. Just beyond the village center, the Orthodox Church of Notre-Dame-de-Kazan offers a different spiritual haven. Originally under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Russian Orthodox Churches in Western Europe, the parish, after a community vote, shifted allegiance to the Vicariate of Russian Tradition under the Metropolis of France in late 2019. This decision reflects the dynamic nature of faith and community within Moisenay. Adding a further dimension to Moisenay’s charm is its proximity to the magnificent Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte. Although technically located in the neighboring commune of Maincy, the chateau casts a long shadow, both literally and figuratively, over the village. Moisenay also holds a special place in the world of entertainment. Roger Champenois, better known as Champi, a celebrated actor, variety artist, and comedian, was born here in 1900. More recently, comedian Caroline Vigneaux has called Moisenay home, adding a contemporary touch to the village’s artistic legacy. From its historical churches to its artistic connections, Moisenay offers a rich tapestry of experiences. It is more than just a village; it’s a living story, waiting to be discovered.
