Was this simply a place of rest, or was it a tapestry of time? Here at the Old Southland Cemetery, the stories of Grand Prairie’s pioneers whisper through the wind. Founded in 1910 by Thomas H. Hall, the cemetery was a necessity. The existing burial grounds lay miles away from the burgeoning community. Hall envisioned a resting place closer to home, a place where the echoes of lives lived would forever grace the air. He dedicated four acres, meticulously plotting the layout with markers crafted from sturdy bois d’arc wood, known for weathering time’s passage. The oldest marked grave belongs to Edward Z. Motley, his story forever entwined with the year 1910. That same year, Thomas laid his own brother, George Byrd Hall, to rest. The cemetery became more than just a final destination; it evolved into a reflection of the town’s respect for its past. Some, like Thomas E. Vernoy and Fannie Millar Sadler with her infant daughter, found their final rest here after being moved from other cemeteries, showcasing the community’s commitment to honoring their own. In 1918, Emma Motley, a pillar of the community, gifted a poignant symbol of remembrance: the cemetery’s grand stone and wrought iron archway. This enduring monument, a testament to her generosity, still welcomes visitors today. The Old Southland Cemetery stands as a chronicle etched in stone. It silently narrates the history of Grand Prairie, reminding us that every life, every story, deserves to be remembered.
