Nestled in the heart of Dallas, the Church of the Incarnation whispers tales of a rich past. It stands as a testament to the vision of Bishop Alexander Garrett, who laid the foundation for this spiritual haven in 1879. Initially known as the Cathedral Chapel of the Incarnation, the church began its journey at the corner of McKinney and Harwood. This location, then considered north of Dallas’s bustling center, symbolized a beacon of faith on the city’s outskirts. The Church of the Incarnation’s journey reflects the city’s own growth. By 1897, the small chapel evolved into a full-fledged parish. The congregation thrived, necessitating a larger space. In 1902, a brick edifice replaced the original chapel. This structure served the growing community for twenty-five years. The Church of the Incarnation continued to flourish. The current neo-Gothic structure, located further north on McKinney at Cambrick Avenue, opened its doors in 1927. This architectural marvel, with its cruciform layout and intricate stained glass, tells a story of continuity and evolution. The south transept houses the “Good Shepherd” window, a beautiful depiction of Jesus that is artificially lit from behind due to its position against the organ chamber. The church has witnessed sixteen rectors guide its spiritual journey, growing from a modest chapel to a sprawling 5-acre campus. The Church of the Incarnation has become a symbol of faith and service in Dallas, boasting a Christian volunteer force of 1,800 households. The Church of the Incarnation is not just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub of music and community outreach.
