Question: What if a few deer and mountain lions sparked a Texas-sized legacy? That’s precisely how the Dallas Zoo began in 1888. It is the oldest and largest zoo in Texas.

Initially, the Dallas Zoo acquired two deer and two mountain lions. The Dallas City Council purchased them for $60 from a Colorado seller. These first animals were housed in City Park.

Fast forward to today. The Dallas Zoo stretches across 106 acres. It houses over 2,000 animals. These animals represent 406 species. You can find this incredible place just 3 miles south of downtown Dallas in Marsalis Park.

The Dallas Zoo has moved a couple of times. It called City Park home until 1910. Then it moved to Fair Park. In 1912, it found its permanent home in Marsalis Park.

In the 1920s, the zoo benefited from a special commission. This commission helped acquire animals from Frank Buck. Buck was a well-known game hunter and trapper.

The Dallas Zoological Society was established in 1955. It supports the zoo’s mission.

By the 1980s, the Dallas Zoo shifted its focus. It emphasized scientific research and humane animal treatment. This aligned with the AZA’s guidelines. The zoo achieved accreditation in 1985.

Today, the Dallas Zoo is divided into two main areas. There is ZooNorth and Wilds of Africa. ZooNorth is the original section. Wilds of Africa came later. It features diverse habitats. These habitats include a rain forest and a savanna.

The Dallas Zoo even has a conservation connection through cell phone recycling. The ECO-CELL program reduces habitat loss for gorillas.
