Whispers from the past. That’s what you feel here at Chiswick Old Burial Ground. A sprawling expanse of history. Right before you lies a significant piece of London’s heritage. Chiswick Old Burial Ground is more than just a cemetery. It’s a living testament to lives lived. It’s an extension of the old churchyard at St Nicholas Chiswick. It sits close to the River Thames in west London.

The oldest parts of Chiswick Old Burial Ground are closest to the church. You can find grand tombs there. The artist William Hogarth’s tomb is a standout. But as you walk further you’ll see Victorian and more modest headstones. The ground covers almost seven acres. Most memorials are made of stone or marble. They are relatively unassuming compared to some larger Victorian cemeteries. However there’s a striking green copper tomb. It stands out near the northern boundary. It’s the resting place of two remarkable artists James McNeill Whistler and his wife Beatrice.

Beatrice Whistler a talented artist and designer herself. She came from an artistic family. Her father John Birnie Philip was a sculptor who worked on the Albert Memorial. Beatrice studied art and worked for Edward Godwin. Godwin was a prominent architect-designer. He influenced the Aesthetic and Arts and Crafts movements. Beatrice created designs for furniture and wallpaper. Many of her drawings feature birds she loved them.

Beatrice married Edward Godwin then later James McNeill Whistler the renowned artist. James and Beatrice lived in Chelsea and Paris. Beatrice helped decorate their Parisian home. Her artistic career blossomed in Paris. She exhibited her paintings under a male pseudonym. She didn’t want her gender to affect how her art was viewed. Sadly Beatrice died young of cancer. Her death devastated James.

Their unique tomb designed by Beatrice’s son wasn’t initially what James wanted. He envisioned roses not a monument. The green copper has weathered beautifully. It’s adorned with classical columns and floral patterns. An inscription a quote from a letter from James to a friend graces the tomb. It speaks of finding final rest in this special place. Sadly the original figures on the tomb were stolen. Replicas were later added.
