Beneath the vast Argentine sky, Estadio Nueva Chicago stands proudly in the Mataderos neighborhood of Buenos Aires. This isn’t just any stadium. It’s a place steeped in history, echoing with the roars of passionate fans and the clash of cleats on grass. Estadio Nueva Chicago, also known as Estadio República de Mataderos, opened its gates on October 27, 1940. Its inauguration was a momentous occasion, marked by a Tercera División match between Nueva Chicago and Sportivo Buenos Aires. The home team triumphed 2-0, securing their promotion to Segunda División. The victory cemented Estadio Nueva Chicago’s place in the hearts of local fans.

The story of Estadio Nueva Chicago begins long before 1940. In their early years, Nueva Chicago played on fields near the Mercado de Hacienda in Mataderos. They eventually settled on a field at Piedrabuena and Avenida Campana, now Avenida del Trabajo. This served as their home ground until 1934. When the land was earmarked for the construction of the Mataderos Health Center, the club had to relocate. This paved the way for the creation of Estadio Nueva Chicago. The club acquired a new plot of land, a former municipal dumping ground, and began construction.

Estadio Nueva Chicago has seen many transformations over the years. A velodrome, inaugurated in September 1944, once encircled the pitch, hosting speedway and midget races between the 1970s and 1990s. The stadium’s capacity has also fluctuated, currently holding around 20,000 spectators, although some sources list the capacity as high as 29,420. Over the years, various stands have been built and renovated, each addition a testament to the club’s enduring spirit. The República de Mataderos stand, inaugurated in 1993 during a match against Almirante Brown, significantly expanded the stadium’s capacity. The Aurelio Ruiz – Juan Callero y Persi stand replaced the old wooden structure in 1997, further modernizing the stadium.

Estadio Nueva Chicago is more than just a football stadium. It’s a vibrant hub of the community. It has hosted a variety of events, from midget car championships to political rallies and even a concert by the Argentine rock band La Renga. The stadium’s location in Mataderos, close to the vibrant Feria de Mataderos and the Mercado de Hacienda, adds to its unique character. It’s a place where the passion for football intertwines with the rich cultural tapestry of Buenos Aires. Estadio Nueva Chicago stands as a testament to the enduring power of community and the beautiful game.
