Amidst the serene neighborhood of Cheltenham, stands the Church of the Holy Name Anglican Church. It whispers tales of dedication and transformation. The Church of the Holy Name Anglican Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the vision of Sister Esther, the remarkable woman who founded the Community of the Holy Name (CHN) in 1888. Originally, CHN’s focus was on the marginalized, working in the slums of Melbourne. The Church of the Holy Name Anglican Church stands as a symbol of this early mission. The sisters initially operated from a humble bakery in Little Lonsdale Street, providing practical and spiritual support. They established soup kitchens, youth clubs, and mothers’ clubs, addressing both physical and spiritual needs. Their work extended to founding children’s homes, a babies’ home, and hospitals. Their involvement with the courts and prisons led to the establishment of a reformatory for girls, the House of Mercy, in Cheltenham. This reformatory eventually evolved into the Retreat House that the sisters ran until 2000. This evolution mirrors the journey of the Church of the Holy Name Anglican Church, adapting to the changing needs of the community. Over time, government agencies took over many of the social services CHN provided. The Church of the Holy Name Anglican Church and the CHN adapted, focusing on individual ministries like chaplaincy in hospitals and prisons, and retreat work. Recognizing the stresses of modern life, the sisters built Esther House, a new convent. The original building transformed into the Spirituality Centre, opening its doors in 2018. The Church of the Holy Name Anglican Church and its associated community continue to offer a space for reflection, prayer, and spiritual renewal.
