Did you know that there is another San Francisco in the US, besides the one in California? It’s right here, in Minnesota. That’s right, we’re standing in San Francisco Township, Carver County. Believe it or not, this small, rural area was named after the bustling city on the coast in the 1850s by William McFadden Foster. He had moved to Minnesota from the west and was so smitten with the city that he dreamed of a little piece of San Francisco of his own. Foster was quite the adventurer, having even been part of the infamous Donner Party. He chose a location along the Minnesota River, hoping to create a thriving village. Unfortunately, the river had other plans. In 1863, a flood destroyed the town center, leaving just 24 square miles of untouched farmland. And while the village was abandoned, the name stuck. Today, you’ll find a quiet community of around 800 residents who enjoy the rural vibes, the rolling hills, and a sense of peaceful isolation. But don’t let the lack of a bustling city center fool you; San Francisco Township is full of interesting pockets of history. For example, there is the historic one-room schoolhouse that serves as the township hall, a working gravel pit owned by a horse ranch, and a solar array that produces enough clean energy to power 225 homes. So, as you can see, San Francisco Township might not be a place for everyone, but its tranquil charm and its intriguing history make it a hidden gem for those seeking a unique experience.
