Doesn’t this church look like a phoenix risen from ashes? Kastrup Kirke stands here, a testament to transformation. It is located on Kastruplundgade 3 in Kastrup on Amager near Copenhagen.

Kastrup Kirke has a fascinating story of change. The original church was built between 1883 and 1884. Henrik Philip Schmidt designed it in a historicist style. It was constructed with red brick and a slate roof. Later the slate roof was replaced with tile. The windows and doors featured a round-arch style. The chancel even had an apse. The north and south walls displayed decorative arch friezes at the top.

However, time brought significant changes to Kastrup Kirke. A major reconstruction took place from 1971 to 1972. This included the addition of a bell tower. Today little remains of the original church, except for the foundations and outer walls.

The new design was entrusted to the sculptor Svend Wiig Hansen. He created a complete artistic renovation using aluminum, glass, and painted surfaces. Per Hebsgaard crafted the stained glass windows depicting naked people based on drawings by Svend Wiig Hansen.

Kastrup Kirke is more than just a building. It is a place for important life events. These include births, baptisms, confirmations, weddings and funerals. The church also hosts various events. Babysalmesang offers music for babies. There are also gudstjenester or church services. Madklubben is a food club. Tapas i det store rum means tapas in the big room. Forfatteraftener are author evenings. Sensommerfest is a late summer party. Sorggrupper are sorrow groups for both adults and children.

Kastrup Kirke also acts as a vejkirke or road church. You will find a churchyard with a chapel outside.

The history of Kastrup Kirke shows resilience and reinvention. It combines old foundations with modern art. The church is a vibrant part of the Kastrup community. It offers solace, celebration, and artistic inspiration to all who enter.
