A forgotten railway station. That’s Saint-Louis-les-Aygalades for you. A ghost of the past. Right here in Marseille.

Saint-Louis-les-Aygalades wasn’t just any station. It was a vital link. A key player in Marseille’s railway history. For decades it hummed with activity. Trains arrived and departed. Carrying goods and people. Connecting this part of Marseille to the rest of the country. The station opened in 1883. Built by the Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée. The PLM. A name whispered with respect among railway enthusiasts.

But long before 1883 there was a station here. A smaller one. Just called Saint-Louis. It served primarily for coal deliveries. It became too small. A decision was made. A new station was needed. That new station. That was Saint-Louis-les-Aygalades. This new station opened in December 1864. It was built to handle the growing demands of the city.

The original Saint-Louis station wasn’t abandoned entirely. It was reopened in July 1869. As an annex to the larger Saint-Louis-les-Aygalades. Imagine the two stations working together. A bustling hub of activity. Connecting Marseille to the world.

Life for Saint-Louis-les-Aygalades wasn’t always smooth. In 1869 the timetable showed a three-minute journey to Saint-Joseph. Seventeen minutes to the heart of Marseille. The journey in the other direction. That took longer. Four minutes to Séon-Saint-André. Eleven minutes to L’Estaque. Consider how much slower life was.

For almost a century Saint-Louis-les-Aygalades served Marseille faithfully. But progress marches on. In 2014 the station closed. Its passenger services ceased. The old building was eventually demolished. Today all that remains are the tracks. And the memories.

Today Saint-Louis-les-Aygalades is a reminder. A poignant reminder of Marseille’s industrial past. A testament to the city’s evolution. Yet it lives on in our stories. In our memories. Saint-Louis-les-Aygalades remains. A silent witness. To a bygone era. A spectral sentinel. Watching over the bustling city that surrounds it.
