Super 8 started with humble beginnings. The first Super 8 opened in 1974. It was located in Aberdeen South Dakota. Ron Rivett and Dennis Brown founded it. The original room rate was just $8.88.
Rivett and Brown each owned 50% of the company. Rivett drew up the blueprints himself. He was inspired by his father-in-law’s stucco work. Super 8s were often built near Holiday Inns. This became a standard practice.
Dennis Brown passed away in 1988. The Super 8 chain had grown to 1000 locations. Hospitality Franchise Systems purchased it. This company later became Cendant in 1993.
Super 8 had a VIP club for frequent travelers. It started in 1976 and grew to 7.6 million members. The VIP program ended in 2003. It was replaced with TripRewards. This became Wyndham Rewards in 2008.
The first Super 8 franchise was sold in 1976. It opened in Gillette Wyoming. By 1978 Super 8 expanded beyond the Midwest. It reached from New York to Washington.
In 1981 the 100th Super 8 broke ground in Aberdeen South Dakota. This was the birthplace of Super 8. By 1993 Super 8 had 1000 properties. The 1000th Super 8 opened in Mount Vernon Ohio. By 2001 there were over 2000 Super 8 motels worldwide.
Super 8 expanded into China in 2004. The first Chinese Super 8 opened in Beijing. By 2011 there were 680 Super 8 hotels in China. They were mainly in major cities.
In 2010 Super 8 upgraded its bedding and bathrooms. In May 2013 Super 8 opened in Turkey. Istanbul was the first location. May 2014 saw the first Super 8 in the Middle East. It opened in Riyadh. In 2023 Super 8 came to the UK. It opened at Chester Motorway Services. It was rebranded from Days Inn.
Super 8 gave its rooms a makeover in 2016. 1800 rooms in the US and Canada were remodeled. Super 8 also held a giveaway of old art and furniture.
The brand organized an art exhibition in New York. It was called “When the Art Comes Down Works from the Super 8 Collection”. It featured 100 pieces of art. Another exhibition was held in Miami in December 2016.
In November 2016 Super 8 launched a promotion for US Army veterans. They received reserved parking at all US and Canada locations.
In May 2017 Super 8 started a marketing campaign. It focused on road trippers. In October 2019 Super 8 introduced its first shared room. It was called ROOM8. In March 2018 Super 8 launched a Jeep Wrangler concept. It was called the ROADM8. It had a coffee machine and mini-fridge.
Minimum standards at Super 8 include free breakfast and free WiFi. For a time you could get free coffee. All you needed was a “See You Along The Way” coffee mug.
