Early inhabitants resided there during the Jomon period, drawn by the fertile land near what was once a coastline that extended further inland. In the Heian period, the imperial family established a shôden manor, called “Kaita-shố”, in the area. It existed into the Nanboku-chố period. The place name “Kaita” eventually came into use around the end of this period.
Kaitaichi, a market town nestled at the mouth of the Seno River, soon became a major transportation landmark. It served as a critical post station on the Sanyôdô highway, which connected Kyushu with the Kinai region. Situated at the heart of the town, the Seno River was a vital lifeline for trade and served as a vital waterway for transporting goods.
The Meiji Restoration dramatically shaped Kaita’s identity. In 1889, the town of Kaitaichi and the village of Okukaita were established within Aki District, Hiroshima. This marked the defining moment when the town of Kaitaichi became an official municipality under the modern system.
But the story took an unexpected turn, as these two municipalities merged in 1956, ultimately forming the town of Kaita. These events continue to shape the town today. You can still see remnants of its vibrant past, even today.
