Ninety years ago Rainier Vista housed defense workers. It was a time of war. People poured into this area to support the war effort. Rainier Vista became their home. It wasn’t glamorous. It was functional. These simple wooden structures provided shelter. They represented a temporary solution to a pressing need.

Rainier Vista is in the heart of the Rainier Valley. It’s a place where fifty-nine languages are spoken. That shows its vibrant cultural diversity. The original homes were built during World War II. They served low-income families for decades. Time and weather took their toll. The old buildings became costly to maintain.

Then came the redevelopment. Between 1999 and 2010 Rainier Vista transformed. The old homes were replaced. New mixed-income units were built both on and off-site. Hundreds of new homes were created. They serve families and seniors from all walks of life.

Today Rainier Vista is a thriving community. There are 895 households. It is only four miles from Seattle’s city center. The Boys and Girls Club provides services. Neighborhood House also contributes. Beautiful parks and gardens add to its charm. The LINK light rail offers easy access to jobs. It connects to downtown Seattle. It provides connections to the University of Washington and Seatac airport.

New Urbanist principles shaped Rainier Vista’s design. Narrow streets slow traffic. Front porches encourage interaction. Low fences around backyards offer privacy. Yet they promote a sense of community.

Rainier Vista boasts numerous parks playgrounds and community gardens. These provide open spaces for residents. They offer places to meet neighbors and play. The Columbia City business district is nearby. It offers shops restaurants and entertainment. The Rainier Vista Center offers essential services. These include job programs case management and Head Start. The Boys & Girls Club adds to the array of activities.

The Rainier Vista redevelopment cost approximately $240 million. Private investment tax-exempt borrowing and a HOPE VI grant funded the project. Public funding and tax-credit equity played a part too. This investment created more than just housing. It built new infrastructure parks open spaces and public art. Community facilities like the Boys & Girls Club and Neighborhood House Rainier Vista Center also benefited.

Rainier Vista showcases successful mixed-income living. Nearly 900 families call it home. They are a blend of low-income and market-rate renters and homeowners.
