Tiset Kirke stands about 13 km south of Aarhus city center. It is more than just an old building. It embodies centuries of history.
Construction of the ship and choir of Tiset Kirke began near the end of the 12th century. The tower and porch were added around the year 1500. Tiset Kirke blends Romanesque and Gothic styles. The ship and choir display Romanesque architecture. The tower and porch showcase Gothic design.
After the reformation in 1536, Tiset Kirke fell under the King’s rule. During the Torstenson War from 1643 to 1645, Swedish soldiers ravaged Tiset Kirke. They stole valuables. They even kept animals in the graveyard. Imagine the desecration, the chaos, the despair felt by the local community.
In 1687, ownership of Tiset Kirke transferred to Constantinsborg estate. Later, in 1799, the church was sold to the priest and four local farmers. They then handed it over to the residents of the parish. In 1961, Tiset Kirke became self-owning.
Disaster struck on New Year’s night 1966-67. A massive fire engulfed Tiset Kirke. The community rallied. They restored Tiset Kirke to its current appearance. Today, the parish council manages the church, rectory, and associated lands.
