Initially it was a branch. The branch belonged to a now-demolished temple. This original temple stood on Upper Chin Chew Street. After that temple was de-consecrated Qing De Gong Temple became the main temple. It is affiliated with Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple on Waterloo Street.
The Urban Redevelopment Authority gazetted it for conservation in 1989. Qing De Gong Temple now resides within the Bukit Pasoh Conservation Area. This area is part of the Chinatown Historic District.
Notice the Nanyang-style roof of Qing De Gong Temple. Shallow curved clay tiles cover it. Green-glazed Chinese circular tiles adorn the ridges. Porcelain dragons flank a blazing pearl on the curved roof ridge. Below the dragons admire the parapet. It showcases porcelain phoenixes and flowers.
Floral tiles made by Gilliot & Cie line the five-foot way walls. Timber trusses feature traditional paintings. Elaborate wooden carvings add to the beauty. The front entrance leads to the main prayer hall. Behind it find a smaller prayer hall and an outdoor courtyard. Living quarters sit to the left of the main hall. They extend to the second floor.
Inside Qing De Gong Temple mosaic tiles cover the columns and walls. The columns boast European-style and Chinese-style Lotus-shaped capitals. Unique circular windows grace the front entrance. Concrete frames with a terrazzo finish surround them. Red-painted mild-steel window grilles complete the picture.
