High above Dresden’s cityscape stand the twin towers of the Christuskirche. Their dark sandstone a testament to time and Dresden’s history.

This isn’t just any church. The Christuskirche in Dresden-Strehlen holds a special place in German architectural history. Built between 1902 and 1905 it’s considered Germany’s first modern church. It marked a departure from the dominant historicism of the late 19th century. The architects Schilling & Graebner created a hall church. A masterpiece of Reform architecture.

Its imposing presence is undeniable. The two 66-meter-high towers are instantly recognizable. They make the Christuskirche a landmark. Interestingly this is Dresden’s last remaining church with double towers. World War II sadly destroyed others. The war damaged the Sophienkirche. It was subsequently demolished.

The Christuskirche suffered damage in the February 1945 bombing. Wolfgang Rauda led its restoration between 1949 and 1951. Unfortunately due to a lack of funds much of the original interior decoration was lost. Further damage from dampness occurred later due to insufficient state support. Another restoration took place from 1973 to 1980. The interior was largely restored to its original style thanks to the designs of Helmar Helas.

Step inside. Notice the impressive 18-meter-wide dome. It’s striking. There are no side galleries. The altar is a stunning focal point. It’s crafted from Cipollino marble from Eubea. A white marble cross stands atop it. Flanking the cross are sculptures of Saints Paul and John by August Hudler.

The Christuskirche’s story isn’t complete without mentioning its magnificent organ. Built in 1905 by the Jehmlich brothers it was damaged in the war. It underwent numerous repairs and restorations. Today it boasts 4140 pipes. That makes it the third-largest organ in Dresden. It’s a magnificent instrument. Its sound reflects the German Romantic period.

Even the church bells have a story. The current peal includes two cast iron bells and one bronze bell. They ring out over Strehlen. They mark the passage of time in this remarkable place. A Luther oak was planted at the Christuskirche. It commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.

The Christuskirche stands as a symbol. It’s a symbol of faith resilience and architectural innovation. It’s a true gem of Dresden. A church that has witnessed history. It continues to serve its community. This is the Christuskirche a place of quiet contemplation and vibrant community life. A place worth exploring. A place worth remembering.
