Here stands the George Borrow Blue Plaque a testament to a life less ordinary. This unassuming blue square tells a tale of adventure language and a spirit as restless as the wind. It marks the London residence of George Borrow a 19th-century writer whose life reads like a thrilling novel.

The plaque itself is simple. It reads George Borrow 1803-1881 Author Lived Here. Yet behind those few words lies a world of travel. It speaks of years spent wandering through Spain Russia and beyond. It whispers of encounters with the Romani people whose language and culture he documented.

Borrow’s life wasn’t confined to London. He was born in Norfolk. His father was a military man. His early years were spent moving between army posts. He even spent time in Ireland where he learned Latin Greek and even the Irish language from a local tutor. These experiences shaped his worldview and provided the raw material for his captivating books.

His linguistic talents were exceptional. He learned languages with ease. This led him to work for the British and Foreign Bible Society. This role took him to St Petersburg where he attempted to supervise a Manchu Bible translation. He was fascinated by the city calling it the finest in Europe. He also met the famous Russian writer Alexander Pushkin though the two never actually met in person.

Later he went to Spain. His time there became the basis for his famous travelogue The Bible in Spain. He described the population of Madrid as being strictly Spanish. He noted the absence of large foreign communities. Borrow’s time in Spain wasn’t just about sightseeing. He also translated the Gospel of Luke into Romani and Basque. These translations however were later banned for personal sale.

Borrow’s literary career was varied. His books are a mix of travel writing and fiction. Lavengro and The Romany Rye are partly autobiographical. They blend fact and fiction leaving readers to determine the truth. The Zincali focused on the Gypsies of Spain. Wild Wales explored the Welsh landscape and its inhabitants. He even produced a dictionary of the Anglo-Romany dialect.

The George Borrow Blue Plaque is more than just a marker. It’s a gateway to a remarkable life. A life lived on the road a life devoted to language and a life filled with unique encounters. It is a reminder of a writer who captivated readers with his eccentric style and adventurous spirit. A spirit that continues to resonate here in London all these years later.
