Curious about a place named after a tree? We are standing in Le Pin. It is a small commune in the Seine-et-Marne department of France. Le Pin is in the Île-de-France region. The village’s name comes from a pine tree. Charles III de Taillebourg supposedly gifted it to his wife.
Le Pin’s story stretches back centuries. The first known mention of the village was in 1126. In the 14th century Miles de Dormans owned the seigneury. Later the Orgemont family acquired it. They kept it until the 16th century. Then it passed to the Angennes family.
François d’Angennes built a château. It was destroyed after the Revolution. A new château was built in the same spot in the 19th century. It too was torn down in 1971. During the war of 1870-1871 Le Pin suffered greatly. The Saxon army pillaged and devastated it.
Le Pin has transformed over time. It shifted from a rural village to an urban commune in the 20th century. Smaller farms disappeared and were turned into housing. Housing developments were built. New infrastructure was created or modified. Since the 1980s the Francilienne highway has crossed Le Pin’s territory. By the end of the 20th century only three active farms remained.
Le Pin’s inhabitants are called Pinois. In 2022 the population was 1,528. The village sits at an altitude between 49 and 135 meters. It covers an area of 6.70 square kilometers. The mayor of Le Pin is Lydie Wallez since 2020.
Several streams flow near Le Pin. These include the Ru de Chantereine and the Ru de l’Étang. The Aqueduc de la Dhuis also passes through the area.
The Saint-Antoine church dates back to the 17th century. It was initially dedicated to Saint Sulpice. The Mairie-école was inaugurated in 1935. The boys’ class became the town hall’s office. The girls’ class became the municipal library. The Ferme de Courgain is a fortified house from the 14th century.
Actor Charles Numa died in Le Pin in 1888. He owned a country house here.
Le Pin is part of the communauté de communes Plaines et Monts de France. The village is near the A104 highway offering easy access to other areas.
The village’s heraldic arms feature a gold pine tree on a mound. The chief is silver with a black double-headed eagle. It is flanked by two red strawberries with green leaves.
