Can you hear the echoes of a France grappling with injustice? This is the story of Malik Oussekine. He became a symbol of police brutality. Malik Oussekine’s story is a tragic chapter in Paris’s history.

Malik Oussekine was a 22-year-old student of Algerian origin. The young man was killed on the night of December 6, 1986. This happened amidst student protests in Paris. They were protesting university reforms. The reforms were called the Devaquet bill. Oussekine was not involved in the demonstration. Police chased him and beat him to death.

His death sparked widespread outrage. People saw Oussekine as an innocent victim. There was no indication he participated in the violence. His medical condition made him appear vulnerable. Remarks by the French National Security Minister fueled anger. The minister blamed Oussekine’s father. He said he allowed him to be out at night.

Paul Bayzelon witnessed Oussekine’s death. Bayzelon was a civil servant. He saw police rush into the building. They beat Oussekine with incredible violence. Oussekine shouted that he did nothing wrong. Bayzelon tried to help but was also beaten.

Emergency services arrived ten minutes later. They transported Oussekine to the hospital. He was declared dead at 3:20 a.m. It was later revealed that Oussekine died at the scene. His family’s lawyer claimed this cover-up was to protect the police.

Malik Oussekine was buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery. His funeral took place on December 10, 1986.

News of Oussekine’s killing intensified the protests. The laws were scrapped two days later. Silent protests were held across France. His death occurred 25 years after the October 1961 massacre. In that event, police killed at least 200 Algerian protesters in Paris.

In January 1990 two police officers were found guilty. They were convicted of assault and battery. This led to Oussekine’s death without intent to kill. Garcia confessed to striking Oussekine. He received a two-year suspended sentence. Schmitt denied involvement. He received a five-year suspended sentence.

Malik Oussekine’s story has been depicted in media. The film “La Haine” was inspired by his death. The Disney+ miniseries “Oussekine” recreates his story. The film “Our Brothers” also tells his story. These films aim to ensure that we never forget Malik Oussekine.

Malik Oussekine’s death marked the end of total police impunity. His story forms part of the French national story. Individual stories like his are important. They help ease tensions in the country. France must treat these historical cancers.
