“Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain” is a name that conjures up a multitude of emotions—from the public’s affection for the late princess to the controversies that plagued its construction.
You’re now standing at the Diana Fountain. As you look at the cascading water streaming down, it’s hard to imagine the turbulent history this fountain endured. The Diana Fountain was dreamt up as a dedication to Diana, Princess of Wales, who tragically died in a car crash in 1997. It was meant to reflect her inclusive and caring personality. After a seven-year wait, it was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II. In the presence of Prince Charles and Diana’s sons William and Harry, the fountain was finally complete.
The fountain was constructed from over 500 pieces of Cornish granite, and its design was shaped like a large, oval stream bed. The rippling waters were intended to represent the two sides of Diana’s life – the happy times and the turbulent moments.
Unfortunately, the Diana Fountain didn’t have a smooth journey from inception to completion. In fact, immediately after its grand opening, it was forced to close due to safety concerns. This is a real “it’s like pouring water on a duck’s back” situation, as people kept losing their footing and were getting injured.
The safety issue wasn’t the only problem. The grass surrounding the fountain became a boggy mess, requiring more work and upgrades. After various alterations, the fountain was reopened. But not without new rules and regulations. You can’t walk or run in the water anymore. This wasn’t how it was envisioned, but the fountain is now a serene and peaceful tribute—a fitting legacy to a loved princess.
As you stand there, taking in the sound of the water flowing down, listen closely; can you hear whispers of Diana’s charm and kindness carried on the breeze? This is the Diana Fountain, a place where the princess’s spirit lives on.
