High atop a volcanic slope stands Santa Ana Tlacotenco. Its name a whisper from the Nahuatl meaning “by the edge of the little brooms”. This ancient village in Milpa Alta is one of twelve original settlements. It boasts a history stretching back centuries.

Santa Ana Tlacotenco’s story begins long before the Spanish conquest. Oral tradition places Toltec people in the area. They called it Tepetlacotenco. Later Chichimeca migrants arrived around the 11th century. Led by Tzompantzin they established Malachtepec Momoxco. This was an alliance of smaller settlements including Tlacotenco. They cleverly chose a location that avoided floodwaters. A central teocalli marked the heart of Tlacotenco.

This teocalli held a significant place in their lives. This ceremonial site later became the foundation for the Church of Our Lady of Santa Ana. The church itself stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Santa Ana Tlacotenco. It was built in the 17th century. It has a single nave a transept a dome and a bell tower. Its beautiful Renaissance door welcomes visitors. In 1933 it was declared a historical monument. The 2017 earthquake caused damage. The church has since been lovingly restored.

Santa Ana Tlacotenco’s strategic location made it part of a larger story. As an altèpetl it was tributary to Xochimilco. After Xochimilco’s defeat it fell under the rule of Mexico-Tenochtitlan in 1483. During the Mexican Revolution the people of Santa Ana Tlacotenco strongly supported the Zapatistas. The village was the site of fierce battles between the Zapatistas and federal forces. These were often brutal hand-to-hand street fights.

Today Santa Ana Tlacotenco thrives. Its vibrant Zocalo pulses with life. People gather in the plaza. They watch the traditional dances. The annual celebration of Santa Ana on July 26th is a highlight. This lively event combines Catholic traditions with ancient customs. Mayordomos from each barrio organize the festivities. Traditional dances such as the Moors and Christians are performed. The air fills with the aromas of mole rice and tamales.

The Academy of Nahuatl Language and Culture stands as a symbol of preservation. It ensures the survival of the Nahuatl language. Located near the Zocalo it represents the enduring cultural heritage of Santa Ana Tlacotenco. This is a village where the past and present intertwine. It is a place that deserves a place in your heart. Come and explore its rich tapestry of history and culture. You won’t be disappointed.
