In 1715, Csömör began to repopulate after a period of desertion following the Mongol invasion. The village of Csömör, nestled in the Gödöllő hills just north of Budapest’s 16th district, holds a history far older than its current population of 10,580 might suggest. Csömör’s first documented mention appears in 1135. This makes it one of the oldest documented settlements in the region. Archaeological discoveries tell of even earlier inhabitants. Traces of New Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age settlements have been found within Csömör, whispering of a continuous human presence stretching back millennia. A Celtic cemetery, dating back to the Iron Age (380-300 BC), was discovered behind the old strand. Among the findings were bracelets, brooches, and even a sword in its scabbard. This discovery offers a tangible connection to Csömör’s ancient past. Later, during the 3rd and 4th centuries, a Sarmatian village thrived on both sides of the Csömör stream. Excavations unearthed Sarmatian pottery and, intriguingly, a Roman bowl from the 3rd century. This hints at trade and interaction between different cultures in the area. Csömör carries echoes of the Avar age. Fragments of bowls from this period have been found. Later still, pottery shards from the 10th and 11th centuries attest to Csömör’s continued presence through the early medieval period. A more recent, yet equally poignant, chapter in Csömör’s history is marked by the Gloria Victis Memorial. Erected in 2006, the memorial honors the countless victims of communism, standing as a solemn reminder of a dark period in global history. Csömör also holds a twin-town relationship with Mojmírovce in Slovakia and Rimetea in Romania. These connections bridge cultures and nations, fostering understanding and friendship in the modern era.
