Ever wondered about the secrets held within these walls? The Kapelle Maria-Oberndorf stands before you. It is more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the Bodenheim community.

This chapel has a rich history. A history that stretches back centuries. The first mention of a chapel here dates back to 1271. Imagine services held in honor of the Mother of God. A priest was assigned here in 1276 to celebrate these masses.

However, the original Kapelle Maria-Oberndorf didn’t survive unscathed. During the Thirty Years’ War, it was ravaged and fell into disrepair. For years, it lay in ruins. It was a somber reminder of the conflict’s impact.

But the story doesn’t end there. In 1739, a spark of hope ignited. The chapel was renovated. New side altars were erected to honor the Mother of God. A hermit from a Mainz monastery took on the care of the chapel. He lived in a room above the sacristy.

In 1742, the Kapelle Maria-Oberndorf was blessed. Five years later, it was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Christoph Nebel. The second Sunday in October became a day of pilgrimage. But this period of revival was short-lived.

French troops destroyed the Kapelle Maria-Oberndorf in 1794. Only the foundation remained. Thankfully, the sacred image, altar, and vestments were saved. The annual pilgrimage shifted to St. Alban parish church. Still, the faithful gathered at the ruins to pray the rosary until 1815.

In 1860, a new chapter began. Dean Anton Schmelzer started raising funds to rebuild the Kapelle Maria-Oberndorf. This was in accordance with Bishop Emmanuel von Ketteler’s wishes. In 1887, a chapel association was founded. Construction began in the winter of 1888/89. The cornerstone was laid on May 12, 1889. The document placed inside acknowledged the generosity of donors. It also noted the free labor provided by drivers from nearby towns.

In 1890, two bells were added to the Kapelle Maria-Oberndorf. The first was dedicated to the Mother of God. The second honored St. Joseph. Bishop Paul Leopold Haffner reconsecrated the rebuilt chapel in 1891. During World War I, both bells were melted down for war materials. Replacement bells suffered the same fate in World War II.

Major renovations occurred in 1962. But cracks and sinking walls required further stabilization. In 1999, a support association formed. It collected funds for preservation. Piles were driven deep into the ground. This secured the foundation.

In 2003, the first pilgrimage after the foundation was secured was celebrated. Today’s bells were acquired in 1976. They were from the station of the Bühler Sisters in Mannheim. One bell is dedicated to St. Jude Thaddeus. The other honors St. Hildegard. The Kapelle Maria-Oberndorf rings its bells daily at noon and 6 PM for the Angelus prayer.

The Kapelle Maria-Oberndorf is a place of peace. It is a place of reflection. It is a symbol of hope. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Consider its long and fascinating history. Remember the people who rebuilt it. Remember their unwavering faith.
