Could a hospital be a place of beauty and solace? You might be surprised as we stand before the YHRP Museum, a unique and heartwarming testament to the healing power of art. Tucked away on the grounds of Hiroshima University Hospital, YHRP Museum is no ordinary museum. Its story began with a generous donation by Professor Yasuo Harada, the former president of the university. He gifted his extensive art collection, comprising around 1,300 pieces, to the hospital. His vision? To create a space where patients, their families, and staff could find solace and inspiration amidst the often-stressful hospital environment. The museum, housed in a striking white circular building, is a sanctuary of peace and reflection. As you wander through the galleries, you’ll encounter a diverse range of artworks, from paintings and sculptures to ceramics and textiles. You’ll see works by renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall alongside pieces by local Hiroshima artists. One notable highlight is the sculpture garden, featuring a captivating collection of bronze statues that seem to blend seamlessly with the surrounding greenery. But the YHRP Museum is more than just a collection of beautiful objects. It’s a place where art is actively used as a tool for healing and wellbeing. The museum hosts regular exhibitions, workshops, and concerts, offering opportunities for patients to engage with art and express their creativity.
