“Elroy,” a name echoing through time, marks more than just a spot on a map. Picture this: a store owner in 1892, gazing at his son Leroy, deciding on a name for the burgeoning community. This is the Elroy Plaque’s origin, a tribute to that simple act of naming.

The Elroy Plaque stands as a reminder of the community’s humble beginnings. Elroy started as Driskill, Dutch Waterhole, and Hume. Then a local store owner chose to honor his son Leroy. Thus, Elroy was born. The Elroy community took root in 1892.

Let’s rewind further. Before Elroy was Elroy, the land had a fascinating tale. General Antonio López de Santa Anna, a figure of immense historical weight, gifted this land. He gave it to a loyal officer. This officer, eager to return to Mexico, traded it for a horse and saddle. Imagine that exchange shaping the future of this place.

A post office once graced Elroy. It opened its doors in 1899. George L Hume was the postmaster. Sadly, it closed in 1902. Mail then rerouted to Del Valle. Yet, even in its short tenure, it connected Elroy to the wider world.

Elroy’s population tells a story of slow growth and perseverance. In 1933, it stood at 25 residents. By 1947, it had quintupled to 125. Even by the 2000 census, it remained at 125. This steady, if not rapid, growth speaks to the enduring appeal of this Texan community.

Today, Elroy plays host to a modern marvel. The Circuit of the Americas roars with the excitement of Formula 1. It also hosts the World Endurance Championship and MotoGP. This state-of-the-art facility brings global attention to Elroy. The Elroy area has a Swedish-Texan heritage. The Moline Swedish Lutheran Cemetery is there.

But it’s not all about speed and competition. Food Paradise, a popular show, filmed at Wild Bubba’s Wild Game Grill in 2012. This culinary highlight put Elroy on the map for foodies.

Elroy’s story has some unusual features. In November 1960, Elroy was the site of a Nike missile test. The test ended in June 1966.

Even in education, Elroy’s history is rich. In 1907, two teachers served 107 white students. One teacher taught 61 black students. Later, Elroy schools joined the Colorado district in 1961. The district then became the Del Valle Independent School District. The Elroy Library is operated by the East Travis Gateway Library District.

So, as you stand before the Elroy Plaque, remember this. You’re not just looking at a marker. You’re connecting with the layers of history. From Santa Anna’s officer to the local store owner and his son Leroy, it is a place where stories intertwine. Elroy isn’t just a name. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Texas.
