Remember Dorothy Bland. Here at 30 Cadogan Place in Chelsea stands a plaque to honor her. The Dorothy Bland Blue plaque marks where the actress lived from 1812 to 1815.

Dorothy Bland, also known as Mrs Jordan, lived a life on and off the stage. Born in Ireland in 1761, she became a celebrated actress. Her talent shone in comic roles.

In 1782, Dorothy Bland took the stage name Mrs Jordan. She quickly gained recognition for her performances. By 1785, she found herself at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. William Hazlitt famously described her appeal. He said her smile had the effect of sunshine. Her laugh was a joy to hear.

Beyond the stage, Mrs Jordan’s personal life drew attention. She began a relationship with Prince William. He later became King William IV. For 20 years, she was his mistress. They had ten children together. All were given the surname FitzClarence. The couple lived like husband and wife. Their primary residence was Bushy House in Bushy Park. William served as Ranger there.

The relationship ended in 1811. Mrs Jordan then moved into this house at 30 Cadogan Place. Though still successful on stage, her final years were difficult. Ill health plagued her. She retired from the theatre in 1815. Dorothy Bland left Cadogan Place for France. Sadly, she died alone and in poverty in 1816.

Dorothea Jordan’s story is one of talent and fame. But it is also a story of personal complexities. The blue plaque at 30 Cadogan Place serves as a reminder. It commemorates an actress who captivated audiences. She also lived a life intertwined with British royalty. It marks a spot where Dorothy Bland once lived. It invites us to reflect on her vibrant, yet ultimately tragic, journey.
