Beneath Jakarta’s skyline a unique structure stands. This is Mesjid Akbar Kemayoran. It is not just a place of worship. It is a landmark that reflects a blend of cultures.
Mesjid Akbar Kemayoran is the largest mosque in Kemayoran. It was built in 2008. The mosque is under the management of the Kemayoran Complex Management Center. You can easily find it in Blok A Kota Baru Bandar Kemayoran. It’s only one kilometer from the ondel-ondel monument. This is an icon of Betawi culture.
Notice the mosque’s unique design. It differs from typical mosques. Instead of a cone-shaped dome with a crescent and star, Mesjid Akbar Kemayoran features a pyramid-shaped roof. At each corner stands a small tower. This design blends Turkish and Demak styles.
Inside the main building your eyes are drawn to the khatib’s chair. It looks like a king’s throne. Craftsmen from Jepara intricately carved it. Trees and gardens surround the main building. There is also a fish pond. Visitors often come to watch and feed the fish.
Mesjid Akbar Kemayoran is more than a place for Muslims to pray. It also has a building for formal events like weddings. The mosque hosts religious activities too. These include charity events, fast-breaking meals, routine recitations, and youth group activities. The mosque wants to emulate the role of mosques in the time of the Prophet Muhammad. It aims to be a center for education and social activities.
Look at the mosque’s location. It is surrounded by skyscrapers. Mesjid Akbar Kemayoran balances this with its unique character. Its dome combines Middle Eastern and Demak architecture. The large pyramid-shaped dome is a signature of tropical buildings. Four small pillars accent each corner. A tall minaret stands at the front. It is made of iron and concrete. This is where the call to prayer is broadcast.
As you enter the courtyard you will find a plaza filled with trees. Buildings such as ablution areas, offices, a library, and a canteen surround it. Near the main stairs is a large bedug under a roof resembling a traditional house. The main building has two floors. The ground floor is a multipurpose space. It hosts weddings and recitations. The main floor is a comfortable prayer hall. It has an open design with stairs outside.
Walking up the main stairs you will see a spacious veranda surrounding the main hall. This veranda serves as wings to the main hall. An open design uses grilles. This allows excellent air circulation. The interior of the main prayer hall is simple. Its decorations are not too detailed. The space feels open. White and cream colors create a bright and airy atmosphere.
Since Mesjid Akbar Kemayoran was built the surrounding streets have become lively. Vendors gather here. Locals enjoy spending evenings with their families. Mesjid Akbar Kemayoran is now a landmark of Kota Baru Bandar Kemayoran. It stands alongside the Jakarta Fairgrounds. It is more than just a building. It is a vibrant part of the community.
