Gazing up at Gereja Katolik St. Yoseph, imagine the echoes of history whispering through its walls. This Catholic parish church, located on Jalan Matraman Raya in East Jakarta, has witnessed over a century of Jakarta’s transformation. Gereja Katolik St. Yoseph’s story began in 1906 with a simple land purchase. This plot along Matramanweg was initially intended for a new church. However, it first served as a pre-autonomy region for Catholic services under Pastor P.J. Hoevenaars of Jakarta Cathedral. The first baptism recorded in the church’s registry took place on June 22, 1909. Christina Wilhelmina Cornelia, born on May 14, 1909, was the first child, of Dutch descent, to be baptized at Gereja Katolik St. Yoseph. This date later became the official birthdate of the Matraman Parish. The actual construction of the church building commenced in 1923. The project cost 70,000 guilders. The cornerstone was laid on September 9, 1923, and the building was completed in a remarkable seven months. The Algemeen Ingenieurs Architecten Bureau, or AIA Bureau, won the construction tender. The architect, Frans Johan Lauwrens Ghijsels, also designed iconic Jakarta landmarks like the Kota Station and the current Bappenas building. His name is immortalized on a plaque within Gereja Katolik St. Yoseph, placed near the old altar after renovations in 2002. Initially, the church accommodated only 400 people, a fraction of the 1,052 parishioners at the time. In 1970, an expansion extended the church to the left, integrating the residence of the SVD priests. This addition created an L-shaped structure, increasing the capacity to 800. Later, Pastor Jan Lali became the first native Indonesian head priest of Gereja Katolik St. Yoseph, serving from 1974 to 1979. Another renovation took place in 2001, led by architect Ir. Erawan Kartawidjaja. After consultations with the Jakarta Museum and Restoration Office, a second building permit was issued on July 9, 2001. The church received its blessing on May 26, 2002, by the Archbishop of Jakarta, Julius Cardinal Darmaatmadja. For its first 30 years, Gereja Katolik St. Yoseph’s congregation was primarily Dutch. By 1921, the congregation numbered 1,052 and grew significantly to 13,000 by 1985. With the establishment of new parishes across Jakarta, the congregation dispersed. By 2004, it had settled around 5,577 members. Today, Gereja Katolik St. Yoseph stands as a testament to faith and resilience, a quiet observer of Jakarta’s ever-evolving story.
