Ever crave truly authentic Thai cuisine? Thai House 530 on Valencia Street is a culmination of a rich family history. The Meeriyagerd family has been a cornerstone of the San Francisco Thai food scene since 1985. Thai House 530 represents the fifth iteration of their culinary journey. It’s a fusion of all their previous restaurants, each with its own unique story. The original Thai House started on Noe and Henry Street. Then came the upscale Thai House Bar and Cafe, followed by Thai House Express 2 (later renamed House of Thai). And of course, the fourth location, also named Thai House 530, paved the way for the current Thai House Express on Valencia.
The Meeriyagerds adapted to San Francisco’s ever-changing culinary landscape. They opened multiple restaurants, effectively dominating the Thai food scene for a time. They eventually consolidated their efforts. They closed several locations (excluding House of Thai) to focus on providing top-notch service at a single restaurant. Thai House 530 on Valencia Street became their home base in the vibrant Castro District. This current location embodies the lessons learned from each previous restaurant. The Meeriyagerds have streamlined their operations. Thai House 530 offers a fast, almost fast-food style dining experience. They’ve even refined their menu. It once boasted over 100 items but is now much smaller, focusing on quality over quantity. Their signature dishes include Dungeness crab pad thai and salmon wrapped in grilled banana leaves. And don’t forget their legendary “Thai spicy” level – a fiery concoction that rivals the heat found in Bangkok.
The Meeriyagerds’ story began in Bangkok, Thailand. They moved to San Francisco in 1982 and started their culinary journey at a seafood restaurant in Corte Madera. They hadn’t planned on owning a restaurant. But life had other plans. Por-Phol, the current owner, was born in 1985, the same year the first Thai House opened. Now, as his parents transition into retirement, he carries on their legacy. Thai House 530 remains a testament to their dedication and passion for authentic Thai cuisine. It’s a place where you can experience a taste of Thailand in the heart of San Francisco.
