What happened here in Kimbro, Texas that was worth remembering? We’re standing before the Kimbro Plaque. This plaque, placed by the Texas Historical Commission in 1991, commemorates a once-thriving community. It’s hard to imagine now, but Kimbro was once home to Swedish, Danish, and German immigrants drawn here in the late 1870s. This land witnessed their hard work, mostly as cotton farmers, building a life from the ground up. The community thrived, boasting homes, farms, even a cotton gin and two general stores. The Swedish Evangelical Free Church of Kimbro held their community together. Children attended the local school, adding laughter and life to the dusty streets. But times change. The school, once full of children’s dreams, closed its doors in 1947 when the Manda Consolidated School District formed. The church, a beacon of faith, was moved to Elgin in 1954. Kimbro’s story reminds us that even in the quietest corners of Texas, history whispers its tales.
