Hackney Central Railway Station

Ever glimpsed a ghost of a station? Hackney Central Railway Station has one. Hackney Central has seen a few iterations throughout history. The original Hackney station opened in 1850 east of Mare Street. This station had a short life. It closed in 1870. A new Hackney station, designed by Edwin Henry Horne, opened west of Mare Street on the same day. This station eventually closed to passengers in 1944 during World War II. The current Hackney Central Railway Station, slightly west of the 1870 station, reopened in 1980. The 1870 station building still stands, a silent observer of the bustling modern station. It now houses a bar and music venue, a testament to Hackney Central’s evolving spirit. Hackney Central is a key station on London Overground’s Mildmay line. It’s a vital transport hub for the area, connecting passengers to destinations like Richmond and Stratford. In 2015, a direct walkway opened between Hackney Central and Hackney Downs stations. This convenient link allows passengers to seamlessly transfer between Overground lines without exiting onto the street. The station has even been proposed as a stop on the future Crossrail 2 line, further cementing its importance in London’s transport network.
