Have you ever wondered what a traditional Thai home nestled in the Danish countryside might look like? Right here, standing majestically, is the Thaihuset, a testament to the long and enduring ties between Denmark and Thailand. This beautiful house, originally from the ancient city of Ayutthaya, was given to the Moesgaard Museum as a gift in 1975. Ayutthaya was Thailand’s capital city for centuries, and the Thaihuset was once part of a larger complex of buildings, connected by beautiful terraces.

The Thaihuset arrived in Denmark in time for a grand exhibition about Thailand, and it has been a beloved feature of the Moesgaard Museum ever since. It is a reminder that even though it’s far from its original home, the Thaihuset carries with it a piece of Thailand’s rich history and cultural heritage. This is the only traditional Thai-style house outside of Thailand. It’s no wonder that the building has been visited by Thai royalty, including Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and Princess Soamsawali.

The Thaihuset has been lovingly restored several times, most recently in 2017. The Royal Thai Embassy and the Raindrop Foundation generously supported this project. As you stand in front of the Thaihuset, take a moment to appreciate its unique blend of traditional Thai architecture and the Danish landscape. Imagine the stories that these walls could tell—stories of bustling markets, vibrant festivals, and a rich cultural legacy that has travelled across the world. The Thaihuset stands as a symbol of the warm relationship between Denmark and Thailand, an enduring connection that continues to flourish today.
