The town owes its name to a surveyor’s party member named Mr Arthur, who sadly passed away here and found his final resting place in the local cemetery. The cemetery is still in operation today. It’s said that the first burial took place in the 1840s.

Today, the town remains a peaceful haven for those seeking a more rustic lifestyle. The charming town has many interesting features, including a primary school, a Mechanics Institute Hall, and a CFA Fire Station. The town also has a cricket oval, known as Ryders Flat. The Mechanics Institute Hall, one of the most charming buildings in town, was built in 1886. Imagine the joyous celebrations when it opened in 1887! What a celebration for the community.
