Imagine artisans shaping clay. These artisans once trained within the walls of the Centro de Artes Calouste Gulbenkian. This building stands as a monument to art education and cultural exchange in Rio de Janeiro.

The Centro de Artes Calouste Gulbenkian was created on March 11 1971. It honors the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation of Lisbon. This Portuguese institution supports arts and culture worldwide.

The Centro de Artes Calouste Gulbenkian arose from a need. The old State of Guanabara needed to train arts and crafts teachers. These teachers would then serve the official school system. In 1975 Guanabara merged with Rio de Janeiro. The Centro Calouste then joined the Municipal Culture Department.

Step inside the Centro de Artes Calouste Gulbenkian. The building covers a large area. Its internal space is 8800 square meters. The external area adds another 1733 square meters. The Gulbenkian Foundation donated funds to the Brazilian government for its construction.

Note the architecture of the Centro de Artes Calouste Gulbenkian. Architects Rizza Paes Conde and Cleia Braga conceived it. They built it between 1969 and 1971. The building exemplifies Carioca modernist style. It is one of the five most prominent examples. The structure uses reinforced concrete. Exposed brick forms the walls.

The Centro de Artes Calouste Gulbenkian has three stories and 32 rooms. It includes the Gonzaguinha Theater. There is also an auditorium and a video room. You will also find two art galleries. Twenty classrooms and workshops fill the space. Here artists learn and refine their skills.

The art gallery Ismael Nery displays amazing works. It is named after a famous Brazilian artist. Talented artists and technicians get training here. They develop skills for art-related professions. The Centro supports municipal interests in culture art and society. It combines art citizenship and education.

Today the Centro de Artes Calouste Gulbenkian remains vital. It serves the population’s cultural artistic and social needs. Its importance as a Municipal Service Hub has been restored. It is a unique place.
