Fifty thousand cheering fans. That was the Heinz-Steyer-Stadion in its prime. Picture the scene. A sea of faces under the Dresden sky. The roar of the crowd. The thrill of victory. The agony of defeat. This is the Heinz-Steyer-Stadion a stadium steeped in history.

The Heinz-Steyer-Stadion wasn’t always a modern multifunctional sports facility. It started in 1918. The Dresdner SC opened their first stadium in the Ostragehege. It was humble. Just a small wooden grandstand and a field. But it was home.

The Heinz-Steyer-Stadion grew. A fire destroyed the original wooden stand in 1928. A grand new stone grandstand replaced it. This was inaugurated with a game against SpVgg Fürth the reigning German champions. The capacity expanded to over 800 seats and 200 standing places.

The Heinz-Steyer-Stadion’s capacity increased further. The stadium needed expansion to meet the growing popularity of football in Dresden. Another stand was built. Attendances soared to over 50000 in the 1930s. The record attendance of 62150 was set in a friendly against Czechoslovakia in 1935. That’s more people than live in many towns. The Heinz-Steyer-Stadion became a symbol of Dresden’s sporting heart.

The Heinz-Steyer-Stadion witnessed history. It hosted Dynamo Dresden’s first Inter-Cities Fairs Cup match. The legendary game was played against Glasgow Rangers. It also hosted the final four round of the 2015 European Junior Championship of American football.

The Heinz-Steyer-Stadion was the home of many clubs. Dresdner SC and the Dresden Monarchs called it home. It even hosted international American football matches. The Dresden Monarchs sometimes used the Heinz-Steyer-Stadion for international games. Otherwise they played in the larger Rudolf Harbig Stadion.

The Heinz-Steyer-Stadion fell into disrepair. Floods damaged it. The aging infrastructure needed major work. The stadium’s capacity was drastically reduced. Major renovations were discussed for years. Yet the funding never materialized.

The Heinz-Steyer-Stadion is reborn. Demolition of the old wooden grandstand began in 2015. A complete rebuild started in October 2021. Now it’s a state-of-the-art facility with 5000 covered seats. The capacity can be expanded to 15000 with mobile stands. The Heinz-Steyer-Stadion is home to elite track and field events. It also houses squash courts and a fencing hall. This modern symbol of Dresden’s sporting excellence is even aiming to be CO2-neutral thanks to rooftop photovoltaic systems.

The Heinz-Steyer-Stadion is ready for the future. It will host track and field events at the World Transplant Games 2025. This cutting-edge stadium will welcome athletes from all over the world. It will be a celebration of sportsmanship and resilience. This is where history meets the future of sport. This is the Heinz-Steyer-Stadion.
