Gucheng Park is not just a green space. It’s a journey through time. This park, nestled in Shanghai’s Huangpu District, offers a serene escape from the city’s hustle. It’s called the Park of the Old City for good reason.

Gucheng Park sits where an old city wall once stood. The walls are gone now. They were taken down a century ago to build Fuyou Road. Today, Gucheng Park bridges Shanghai’s past and future.

Imagine stepping into Gucheng Park. You’re not far from the Bund and Yuyuan Garden. Yet, you’ve entered a different world. Parts of the old city walls have been rebuilt here.

An observation deck marks the spot of Danfeng Tower. Danfeng Tower was once Shanghai’s highest point. Back in the mid-19th century, seeing the view from Danfeng Tower was one of the eight best things to do in Shanghai. People could see the Huangpu River. During the Dragon Boat Festival, crowds gathered to watch the races.

Danfeng Tower started as a Taoist temple. It was built between 1265 and 1274. Fire destroyed it about 100 years later. It was rebuilt with three stories. The top floor honored the Lord of Culture. The second floor was for General Guan Yu. The first floor celebrated the Lord of Thunder. The tower suffered damage during uprisings. It briefly became a school in 1912 before being torn down that year.

Don’t miss the old kitchen in Gucheng Park. It’s a preserved kitchen from a shikumen house. These houses were home to residents before the park was built. The kitchen has a cement sink and old taps. The bluestone floor reminds older people of the past. It shows younger people how life used to be.

A local resident said her old kitchen looked just like it. Three families shared that kitchen. It was cramped. But now, the memories are sweet.

Walk toward the bamboo copse. Bamboo is rare in downtown Shanghai. This grove offers a quiet place to relax. You can stroll along the stone pathway.

Notice the traditional Chinese mansion. It’s the former South Shanghai Bankers’ Club. It was first built in 1883. Shanghai’s first bankers met here. They talked business and honored the God of Fortune.

Shanghai’s banking industry grew in the 18th century. It peaked in the 1930s. Local bankers learned from Western bankers. They saw the value of having a private place to meet.

The club was originally located in the Old Town. In 2000, the mansion was moved here during redevelopment. Stone lions guard the gate. The stone window carvings are worth a look. Bats symbolize good luck. Other carvings show daily life in Shanghai in the late 1800s.

Gucheng Park is open 24/7. It’s one of seven parks in Huangpu District with round-the-clock access. The park management patrols at night. Emergency numbers are posted.

As you leave Gucheng Park, remember its layers of history. It connects you to Shanghai’s past. It provides a peaceful escape in the present.
