Established in 1860 The Olympic Club stands as the oldest athletic club in the United States. Right here before you is a place steeped in history. Imagine its founding members. Twenty-three men gathered to forge a legacy of athletic excellence. Their vision blossomed into this impressive institution. This magnificent City Clubhouse you see today wasn’t always here. The original structure was sadly lost in the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The current building however a testament to resilience rose in 1912.
The Olympic Club’s story is not just about brick and mortar. It’s about the countless athletes who have graced its grounds. James J Corbett heavyweight boxing champion from 1892 to 1897 was a member. He even coached boxing here for years. The club’s impact extends beyond individual achievements. In 1915 its amateur basketball team conquered the Amateur Athletic Union AAU Basketball Championship. This winning spirit continued through the years with victories in track and field water polo and even tennis.
The Olympic Club’s legacy is deeply intertwined with golf. The club boasts three renowned courses Lake Ocean and Cliffs. These courses weren’t always as you see them. The original Lakeside Golf Club was taken over in 1918. Then it was replaced by the Lake and Ocean courses designed by Willie Watson and Sam Whiting. They opened in 1924. But storms struck and Sam Whiting redesigned them in 1927. The Lake Course has since been further modified notably for the U S Open.
The Olympic Club has hosted prestigious tournaments like the U S Open five times. This is where legends were made and shattered. Jack Fleck’s improbable victory over Ben Hogan in 1955 remains legendary. Other dramatic U S Open moments unfolded here. Billy Casper’s comeback win in 1966 stands out.
