Ever tasted Primo beer? Right here stands the Royal Brewery its history brewed into every brick.

This magnificent building is more than just old it’s the oldest surviving brewery structure in all of Hawaii. It’s a landmark a testament to Honolulu’s brewing past. The Royal Brewery opened its doors in 1900. It was designed by Hermann Steinmann a New York architect who understood the art of brewing. He crafted a Romanesque Revival masterpiece a style rarely seen in breweries of the time.

The Honolulu Malting and Brewing Company thrived here. They launched Primo beer in 1901 a local favorite that helped shape Hawaii’s drinking culture. The brewery continued its success even through Prohibition’s dry spell. After Prohibition ended it became home to the American Brewing Company. Their Royal beer was nearly always on tap until 1962. Only a 1939 strike and a brief wartime shutdown temporarily halted production.

In 1960 declining sales prompted a massive $250000 modernization plan. Sadly it wasn’t enough. The American Brewing Company closed its doors in 1963. The building stood empty for years before undergoing a much-needed renovation in 1996. Today the Hawaii Community Development Authority calls this architectural gem home.

Imagine the clanging of machinery the aroma of hops and malt filling the air. Feel the weight of history beneath your feet. The Royal Brewery isn’t just a building it’s a living piece of Hawaiian history a toast to the past and a reminder of the state’s rich brewing legacy.
