“A street named after a trade unionist is rare in Paris.” Let me tell you about Rue Renée Boulanger. This street honors a man who stood for his beliefs. He fought for the rights of workers.

Rue Renée Boulanger is more than just a street. It is a testament to courage and conviction. Renée Boulanger was no ordinary man. During the dark days of the Occupation, he was a key organizer. He worked with the underground CGT.

The CGT was a powerful trade union. It played a crucial role in resisting the Nazi regime. Boulanger helped coordinate the union’s secret activities. He risked his life daily to undermine the occupiers.

Tragically, Renée Boulanger’s bravery led to his capture. The Gestapo, the Nazi secret police, arrested him. They subjected him to brutal torture. But he never betrayed his comrades. He died on March 7, 1944. He was only 43 years old.

Paris remembered Renée Boulanger. On December 18, 1944, the city renamed this road in his honor. The street’s new name served as a constant reminder. It recalled the CGT’s regional office presence on Rue Bondy. Here, the white collar finance section of his union was located.

But there is more to this street’s story. Before it was named after a hero, it housed artists and revolutionaries. At number 50, Pierre-Jean de Béranger lived in a garret. This was in 1800. He was just 20 years old.

Later, at number 60, another notable figure was born. Georges Seurat, the famous painter, came into this world. He was born on December 2, 1859.

Number 60 also housed a different kind of movement. It was the address of the monthly journal La Voie Communiste. This was an opposition paper. It challenged the Communist Party from within. Gérard Spitzer and Denis Berger started it in 1958. They supported the Algerian FLN. The journal ceased publication in 1965.

Rue Renée Boulanger carries layers of history. It has seen artists find their voice. It has been home to political dissent. And it honors a man who gave everything for his beliefs.

So, as you walk along Rue Renée Boulanger. Take a moment to remember its past. Remember Renée Boulanger’s sacrifice. Remember the artists and activists who shaped its story. This street is a reminder that courage and conviction can change the world.
