Hidden within Richmond Park’s embrace lies Pembroke Lodge Gardens. Eleven acres of meticulously landscaped grounds surround the Georgian lodge. This isn’t just any parkland. It’s a place steeped in history whispering stories of powerful figures and pivotal moments.

Pembroke Lodge began humbly as a one-roomed cottage in 1754. A molecatcher’s modest dwelling it served a vital purpose. Molehills hampered deer hunting. The cottage’s expansion into a grander house followed. It became Hill Lodge then eventually Pembroke Lodge.

Elizabeth Herbert Countess of Pembroke and Montgomery a close friend of King George III acquired the house in 1787. She transformed it. Under the skilled hands of architects Sir John Soane and Henry Holland the Georgian wing and part of the north wing were added between 1788 and 1796. The Countess’s legacy endures. She died at Pembroke Lodge in 1831 at the remarkable age of 93.

The Lodge’s next chapter unfolds with Lord John Russell the Prime Minister. Queen Victoria granted it to him in 1847. He conducted government business there. He entertained royalty dignitaries writers like Dickens and Thackeray. Even Garibaldi graced its halls. Lord John Russell considered Pembroke Lodge unparalleled in England. He passed away there in 1878.

His grandson Bertrand Russell the renowned philosopher and logician grew up in the Lodge. From 1876 to 1894 he was surrounded by its beauty. He later wrote of his childhood memories of “wide horizons and an unimpeded view of the sunset.”

Subsequent residents include Georgina Dowager Countess of Dudley. She lived there until 1929 making further improvements. The grave of her dog Boy is a poignant reminder of life within the Lodge’s walls.

During World War II Pembroke Lodge became home to the GHQ Liaison Regiment. Known as Phantom this elite unit had its headquarters nearby. Its members achieved greatness in various fields. Their stories add another layer to Pembroke Lodge’s rich past.

Daniel Hearsum revitalized Pembroke Lodge in 1997. He transformed a run-down catering facility into a vibrant venue. His restoration ensured that this historical site lives on. The Hearsum Collection a registered charity continues the work. It preserves Richmond Park’s history within Pembroke Lodge.

As you walk through Pembroke Lodge Gardens remember its layered history. The molecatcher the Countess the Prime Minister the philosopher the soldiers the restorer. Each left their mark. The gardens offer a tranquil escape. But they also hold secrets waiting to be discovered. Their silent witness to centuries of history continues.
