Mount Waverley’s story begins long before its modern development. In 1853 Assistant Surveyor Eugene Bellairs laid out the area. He divided it with straight roads precisely one mile apart. The Mount Waverley Post Office opened in 1905. This marked a significant step in the suburb’s growth.
Early Mount Waverley wasn’t quite the picture of suburban bliss. The Glen Alvie Estate envisioned a prestigious country estate. It was a grand plan decades ahead of its time. Top quality land was purchased. The vision included a clubhouse tennis courts a bowling green. There were even plans for a swimming pool. Sherwood Park a large central area was lined with date palms. These palms still stand today a silent testament to the original vision. However the Great Depression struck. The construction of houses on the earliest estates didn’t begin in earnest until the 1950s. Before that a few residents lived in makeshift houses. They’d migrated east from Ashburton seeking a better life. Instead they found a mosquito-infested swamp. Despite their disappointment they all agreed the swamp was an upgrade from their former homes.
Stephensons Road the main thoroughfare runs through the heart of Mount Waverley. It has changed names several times throughout its history. This road stretches from Ferntree Gully Road in the south to Highbury Road in the north.
Mount Waverley’s evolution didn’t stop there. In 1927 construction began on a reservoir. It’s situated on High Street Road. This reservoir is one of the highest points in Mount Waverley. The land surrounding it rises 138-150 meters above sea level. The popular Melway street directory was first produced in a garage in Mount Waverley. Today it’s published from premises on Ricketts Road.
The suburb is home to a multitude of places of worship. There’s Holy Family Catholic Church St Stephen and Mary’s Anglican Church. There are also several Uniting churches a Church of the Nazarene and a variety of other churches. Each one adds its own layer to the rich cultural tapestry of Mount Waverley. Mount Waverley has seen many changes. It has transformed from a sparsely populated area to a vibrant suburb. It’s a place where history meets modern life.
