“Good land.” Do you know where this name comes from? This is Whenuapai. I will share the story of Whenuapai School.

Whenuapai School has strong community ties. In particular, it has ties with the RNZAF. It also has ties with the Anderson Family. Both have generously supported the school since its beginning.

Back in 1957, the Waitemata City Council planned a new school. They wanted to build Whenuapai School on Kennedy Road in Kumeu. The council was about to buy the property. Then someone suggested the school should be in central Whenuapai. It should be near the Airbase. The council bought the Whenuapai Poultry Farm from the Andersons. Preparations for Whenuapai School started. It began with just three permanent classes. These are now rooms 12, 13 and 14.

Mr. Mcrae was the founding principal. His wife was also a staff member. They lived nearby. They resided in the school house on the corner of Totara Road. The first school committee faced many challenges. They needed classrooms for the growing school. They wanted a pedestrian crossing outside. They also needed a telephone installed.

Whenuapai School has grown significantly since 1957. Whenuapai School is committed to serving its community. Whenuapai continues to blossom on those early foundations.

Let’s appreciate the history of Whenuapai School. It is a place of learning and community.
