Didn’t Captain James Cook anchor just off Man O’ War Bay, close to where we are in Orapiu? He noted that the magnificent kauri trees would make ideal masts for the Royal Navy’s warships. Welcome to Orapiu, a rural settlement on Waiheke Island’s southeast coast. It sits on a small peninsula between Te Matuku Bay and the Waiheke Channel.

Orapiu offers a glimpse into Waiheke’s past. Māori used Te Matuku Bay for food gathering. Their waka landed here. Later, it became the site of the first Pākehā settlement on Waiheke. A school once stood here.

In 1915, the Orapiu wharf was built. The area was subdivided in 1916. Before that, there were boarding houses here. The Orapiu Road Board was formed in 1921. In 1947, it merged with the Ostend Road Board. This may have been the smallest local authority in New Zealand. It controlled an area of just 35 hectares.

Today, Orapiu is a small community. As of June 2024, the estimated population was 70. Orapiu is part of the larger Waiheke East statistical area. In the 2023 census, the population was 66.

Orapiu is known for its beautiful coastal walk. The walk runs from Pearl Bay, part of Te Matuku Bay, to Orapiu Bay. You can enjoy stunning views along the way.

The eastern end of Waiheke Island is home to vineyards. Passage Rock Winery is the most awarded winery on the island. Man O’ War Vineyards is known for its Syrah, Chardonnay and Waiheke’s signature Bordeaux blends. Waiheke Distilling Co. sits on the ridge above Cowes Bay. Here, you can sample gins and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.

Note that transport from Orapiu wharf is limited. There is no public transport or car hire vendors here. Many roads are gravel and not safe for walking.

Orapiu offers a peaceful escape. It is a place to connect with nature and enjoy Waiheke’s beauty. As you explore, remember the history of this area. From Māori food gathering to early European settlement, Orapiu has played a role in Waiheke’s story. Today, Orapiu remains an untouched paradise not to be missed.
