Did you know that Risskov Gymnasium almost ended up in a different location? Originally, the school commission of Vejlby-Risskov Municipality wanted to place the fifth gymnasium in Vejlby. However, a municipal reform shifted the plans. The municipalities surrounding Aarhus and Aarhus County took over. Risskov became the chosen location. The beautiful buildings of Risskov Gymnasium, nestled in green surroundings, were designed by Friis & Moltke in the late 1960s. The first students arrived in August 1968, greeted by the founding rector, Just Vange. These initial classes were held in borrowed rooms at Strandskolen while their own building was being completed. The official inauguration of Risskov Gymnasium finally took place in October 1969. Today, Risskov Gymnasium boasts around 780 students. Risskov Gymnasium isn’t just about academics. The school is adorned with five stunning artworks by John Kørner, a generous donation from the New Carlsberg Foundation in 2011. These pieces, including “Together with the Shadow” and “Alone with the Clouds,” were specifically created for Risskov Gymnasium. The artist, John Kørner, even had a comical encounter with the school during his initial visit. He bumped his head on a low-hanging door frame! The doorway was later raised to accommodate both the artist and his magnificent works. The architecture of Risskov Gymnasium is notable in itself. The school consists of four separate wings, connected by covered walkways. These walkways even have charming names like Nørregade, Algade, and Søndergade. The red, hand-struck brick facades give the buildings a warm and inviting character. These bricks contrast beautifully with the prefabricated concrete beams and girders that form the structural framework. Risskov Gymnasium has a rich history and a vibrant present. It continues to nurture young minds and inspire creativity.
