Established in 1857, Sutton Cricket Club first graced “The Green” in Sutton. The club quickly found a new home in 1858, nestled within a local estate on Gander Green Lane where it remains today. Sutton Cricket Club resourcefully acquired an old waiting room from Sutton Station in 1865, transforming it into a clubhouse which still stands today. Cricket flourished at Sutton Cricket Club with the construction of a wooden pavilion in 1906, sadly lost during the Battle of Britain in 1940. Rebuilt after 15 years, Sutton Cricket Club emerged stronger. A groundsman’s sabotage of the square in 1974 led to its innovative reorientation. The same year, a squash club joined Sutton Cricket Club, enriching its social scene. Fast forward to 2012, Sutton Cricket Club’s clubhouse underwent a transformation, emerging with a sleek, modern design and upgraded amenities. Sutton Cricket Club also boasts a second ground, Holmwood Close, purchased in 1986 and hosting matches since 1989. Sutton Cricket Club’s legacy extends to its remarkable players. The club has been a springboard for county and international stars, including names like Graeme Pollock, Michael Carberry, Sulieman Benn, Keith Medlycott, Phil Sampson, Johann Myburgh, Arun Harinath, Connor McKerr, Jamie Smith, and Josh Blake. Sutton Cricket Club has also celebrated victories in several Surrey Championships, including the inaugural one in 1968 and most recently in 2009. From its humble beginnings on “The Green” to its present-day glory, Sutton Cricket Club continues to thrive as a hub of sporting excellence.
