What if tiny mice held the key to groundbreaking scientific discoveries? Right here at the Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales – Bioterio that thought becomes reality. It’s a facility dedicated to providing high-quality animal housing and experimental spaces. The Bioterio supports vital research projects. These projects often involve animal experimentation.
The Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales Bioterio is more than just a place for animals. It is a hub for scientific advancement. It’s split into the Bioterio Central and the Bioterio de Animales No Tradicionales. Each serves a unique purpose. Both are overseen by dedicated professionals. Martín Brahamian is the Director General. Vet. Víctor Fernández is the Coordinator and veterinary supervisor.
Its primary goal is to actively house mice for animal experimentation. This service is mainly aimed at researchers from the FCEN-UBA. All activities are closely supervised by the CICUAL. The Bioterio also ensures suitable conditions for animal reproduction. This is crucial for maintaining healthy research populations.
Beyond housing, the Bioterio offers high-level scientific-technical services. These services aid animal experimentation. The Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales – Bioterio provides work areas for specialized experiments. These experiments require conditions beyond standard laboratories. They also offer passive housing for non-traditional research animals. This ensures proper management of all animals at FCEN-UBA.
The Bioterio’s role extends to oversight. It supervises decentralized bioterios. This ensures all locations meet hygiene, safety and CICUAL standards. In 2020 the Bioterio Central of the Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales (FCEN-UBA) hosted a training course. This course focused on laboratory animals and experimental design. The training was designed for professionals in biological and biomedical fields. It targeted those working with laboratory animals. The aim was to improve quality, efficiency and ethics in research.
The course covered animal care and use. It also taught experimental design. Participants could take both courses together or separately. The “Care and Use of Laboratory Animals” course was extensive. It included both theory and practical audiovisual material. The “Experimental Design” course combined theory with supervised exercises.
The Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales – Bioterio also emphasizes animal welfare. A “Bienestar Animal: Cuidado y Uso de Animales de Laboratorio” course was offered. It was aimed at professionals working with animals in labs and in the wild. The course was held in a hybrid format. It combined in-person sessions with virtual options. This allowed broader participation.
The Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales – Bioterio impacts research. It is about ethical and responsible animal care. The Bioterio ensures that animals are treated with respect. It supports advancements in science and medicine. The Bioterio ensures that research is conducted to the highest standards.
