Gazing at St Augustine’s Church, one might hear whispers of sea shanties and dockworkers’ calls. St Augustine’s Church stands proudly on Bourke Street in Melbourne’s CBD. It’s a testament to the city’s rich history and enduring faith. Originally opened in 1867, St Augustine’s Church wasn’t meant to be a grand cathedral. It started as a simple chapel of ease for St Francis’ Church. Its purpose was to serve the growing western part of the city, particularly the workers around the nearby docks. The church’s connection to these early laborers is beautifully captured by the anchor and plaque in its small garden. The original design, a masterpiece by architect T.A. Kelly, is a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture. Constructed from bluestone, its pointed arches are accentuated with white stucco. The intricate window tracery, sturdy buttresses, and the square tower with its crenelated parapet and finials all contribute to its timeless charm. In 1936, the tower received an extension, reaching further towards the sky. Later, in 1965, the sacristy was added. While the area around St Augustine’s has changed drastically over the years, with nightclubs and office blocks replacing the old docks, the church remains. Today, it serves as a vibrant center for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal movement, ensuring its continued role as a place of worship and community.
