The Ormond College Main Building, dating back to 1879, is a testament to the Gothic Revival style. It’s renowned for its cloistered quadrangle and the iconic bell and clock tower that have stood watch over generations of students. But behind its grand façade lies a story of meticulous restoration and clever design solutions. One such challenge arose from the need to update the safety of the building’s historic timber staircases. These staircases, with their beautifully turned timber balusters and handrails, wind their way up three storeys and are an integral part of the building’s charm. However, they didn’t meet current building regulations for balustrade and handrail heights. Instead of compromising the original design, the architects devised an ingenious solution: introducing a second handrail that seems to float above the existing one. This new handrail, while unmistakably contemporary, blends seamlessly with the historic aesthetic. The project involved 3D scanning the exact profile of the existing balustrades and using digital fabrication to carve a new handrail that followed the three-dimensional curvature of the original with absolute precision.
